The beginning of the blend

Blender pilled.

I’ve always considered myself to be a creative person, but I don’t rate my artistic ability very highly and I have a very weak ability to visualize objects in my mind which I imagine doesn’t help.

With Blender I discovered something that immediately resonates with me far more than traditional art ever did. For one thing I’m very much into technology, programming, and more than capable of using CAD to design basic 3D printed objects. With Blender the ability to just model things the way they are (at least approximately) and then have the almost infinite capability to move things around, play with lighting, cameras, etc, appeals to me much more than trying to represent them directly in a 2D image.

I have dabbled with Blender on and off for a few years but now the opportunity has arisen to collaborate with a good friend on a good idea and in order to achieve the level of quality the project deserves I must (and want to) endeavor on a journey of rapid self improvement.

Motivation is always a struggle and I am pairing together both this blog and a more formalized plan than I would usually follow in order to provide myself with some structure and avoid the usual inaction inducing panic as I picture how far I am from where I want to be.

So, the plan, although very much subject to change, is as follows:

  • For at least the next 3 months it’s back to basics, following along with the recently published Core V2 courses on CGCookie
  • Alongside the courses to make sure I’m creating and not just copying I will regularly create small to medium size projects guided by random prompts
  • I will supplement this with any other videos, tutorials and courses that strike my fancy to keep myself interested / motivated
  • I will also begin to build up a small library of assets that might one day be suitable for the big project (Spoiler: Space themed)
