The power of marbles

I’ve been looking more into stylized effects for my big upcoming project and stumbled across a few different tutorials for this very cool looking electricity effect.

Geometry nodes is heavily involved here. The basic process is:

  1. Distribute points on the faces of an object
  2. Randomly delete a section of those points based on the scene time
  3. Of the remaining points generate random curve lines starting from those points
  4. Find the closest face to the end of the line and move the end of the line to that face
  5. Add some curve/fuzz to each line animated with the scene time

The final effect is pretty cool and can be added to any object. It should also in theory be pretty simple to use different objects for the origin and the target of each line of electricity.

Also did this with a painterly style in the compositor for fun, but it’s quite compute intensive and I only have my laptop at the moment so I only did a few seconds.
